3. Avoidance
There is one common adaptive strategy that is usually noticed with patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder – the avoidance of certain things that may remind them of the disturbing incident in the past. Patients often avoid locations, activities, and even people that trigger their recollection of the traumatic experience.
Although avoidance may sometimes be helpful in the treatment of early stages of PTSD, doing it because of emotional reasons may worsen the condition. If a person suffers from having emotional triggers and completely avoids situations that have similar feelings attached to it, the patient’s psychological and social behaviors may be compromised.
