Why Does Diabetes Lead to Amputation

How to Reduce The Risk of Diabetes Amputation

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it is important that you know how to reduce your chances of amputation. If you ask your doctor, he or she will most likely stress that preventing foot injury is the best and the only way to prevent amputation.

Fundamentally, having better control of your diabetes and ensuring healthy blood sugar level will prevent the onset of diabetes complications. It would also help if you quit smoking.

In particular, it is wise to start a foot care regime. Here is what you should do:

  • Wash your feet every day
  • Apply moisturiser on your feet to prevent dry skin as unattended dry skin can lead to cracked skin and infection
  • Check thoroughly for skin injuries or wounds on your feet which include cracked skin, cuts, blisters, ulcers and sores. Pay attention to the underside of your feet as well.
  • Avoid walking barefoot

If you have an injury on your foot, see your doctor as soon as possible to get it treated.
