8. Toxic Shock Syndrome
Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare disorder which happens frequently in females. It causes a life threatening condition with serious complications. The root cause of this syndrome is bacterial infection. There are two staph bacteria which can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome. It can be the result of Staphylococcus aureus and sometimes the result of its sister bacterium known as group A streptococcus (strep) bacteria. These bacteria produce a toxin. This serious malady is usually the result of using super-absorbent tampons. It can affect men, children, and senior citizens as well. It is accompanied by chills, fever, and rashes on the palms and soles. It can also lead to seizures!
The group most affected by this harmful bacteria has been menstruating women. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, and have used a tampon, see a doctor immediately. Time is important, in order to prevent the onset of complications, which include renal failure, shock, and sadly death. If you have had any type of staph contamination in the past, it is recommended not to use tampons!
