4. Bladder and Bowel Changes

Bladder and bowel changes can also be symptoms of spinal stenosis. The spinal cord is composed of 31 segments, 5 of which are located in the lumbar region or the lower back of the body. This is the same region where vital organs such as kidneys and bladder are nearly located. When the nerves in the lumbar vertebrae are pressurized and affected by spinal stenosis, it may pose risks and involuntary changes to defecation and urination.

The condition is called cauda equina syndrome, a serious adverse effect of spinal stenosis that needs urgent medical attention. Sufferers also encounter numbing of the legs, inner thighs, and lower extremities of the body along with uncontrollable bladder and bowel movements.
