2. Muscle Rigidity

Another sign and symptom of Parkinson’s disease is muscle rigidity. For healthy individuals, their muscles contract during movement and will stay at ease when at rest. However, for people with Parkinson’s disease, their muscles will not completely remain at ease, even when at rest. This is why their range of motion is often limited.

Sometimes, patients with Parkinson’s disease will find it uncomfortable and painful to move their muscles. This usually affects the shoulder area, as well as the neck, limbs, and trunk. In some patients, muscle rigidity can happen anywhere in the body. The affected individual will also not be able to swing his or her arms when walking.
