8. Discharge

Ear infections that affect the skin’s outer layers can produce a discharge. This indicates that there is a buildup of fluid and bacteria in the ear. As the condition becomes more severe, you may notice a yellowish fluid discharging from the ear.

Take note that the fluid discharge is different from earwax. Earwax is often crumbly and dry, while the fluid discharge is runny and may sometimes come with blood. Also, depending on the infection’s severity, the fluid may produce a pungent odor. The fluid discharge must be cleaned off immediately to prevent the bacteria from further spreading.
