8. Smoking
Smoking is also one of the most common causes of sinus infection. Unknown to many, smoking can actually affect the nasal passages’ inner lining, which explains the reason behind sinus infection in people who smoke.
Cilia, the hair-like structures that move back and forth in the nose, can help to minimize the risk of infection by sweeping any foreign particle away. If you smoke often, the cilia can’t function normally, which puts you at risk of developing a sinus infection. Since the cilia cannot move the way it’s supposed to, mucus will start to buildup and affect the nasal passage, leading to sinus infections.
