6. Treatment Approach

Those who have diabetic ketoacidosis can be treated in intensive care during the first 24 to 48 hours. Proper vigilance must be maintained if there are any concomitant conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, or infection. Electrolyte and fluid correction is also necessary after the gradual correction of acidosis and high blood sugar.

Patients must not be discharged until such time that they can go back to their normal daily regimen of insulin use without any incidences of ketosis. When the patient’s condition is stabilized, the patient will be allowed to eat food followed by a dose of insulin.
