6. Respiratory Distress

Respiratory distress, or difficulty breathing is a more serious aspect of toxic shock syndrome. When a patient’s blood does not have enough oxygen, which means that your blood is not receiving the oxygen it needs. The signs of respiratory failure include a feeling that one cannot get enough air, shortness of breath and lips, fingers or toes may start to have a bluish color to them. A person experiencing respiratory failure may be extra sleepy or lose consciousness completely. The patient may also experience arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat. Medical personnel will need to perform simple tests to find the best solution.
