6. Painful Yellow Flaking Nails
The fungus that causes ringworm may also affect nails which may be harder to treat compared to other parts of the skin. This is because most topical medications are not able to penetrate the finger or toenails. Sufferers may experience thickening of the nails making it more brittle as well as a change in its color.
Affected nails can look opaque, brown, or even yellow at times. The fungus contaminates the base of the nail and eats up its nutrients and moisture making the nail itself unhealthy. Separation of the nail from the base as well as foul odors may also occur.
