One annoying symptom of flu is the accumulation of mucus at the back of your throat. Gargling with salt water and then spitting it out can really help with reducing the mucus that develops at the back of your throat. This is especially true if you are lying down for long periods of time. When you are sick, a thick mucous can collect at the back of your throat when you are lying down. Gargling with salt water helps to get rid of that mucus.
