6. Fever
Many patients with tonsillitis will develop a fever. The fever is not due to the infection itself, however, it is a result of the immune system trying to fight off the infection. Many doctors believe that the fever could kill the viruses or bacteria that are causing the inflammation of the tonsils since these agents are sensitive to temperature changes.
Most fevers in tonsillitis are only mild. The patient should feel better after only a few days. However, if the temperature of the patient can get very high and will go over 103 degrees F, the patient must immediately be taken to the hospital to be given a medical emergency.
