6. Alcohol
A drink every once in a while, is okay but excessive drinking can cause acid reflux. Alcohol can do this in one of three ways. Firstly, it can relax your esophageal sphincter which, as mentioned, will allow stomach acid to run back up into your esophagus. Secondly, alcohol can increase the amount of stomach acid in your stomach, which will in turn cause heartburn. Last but not least, drinking a lot of alcohol can damage the lining in your esophagus. The damage to this lining will make your esophagus vulnerable to stomach acid.
Therefore, it is best to stay away from alcohol as much as possible if you suffer from GERD or struggle with heartburn.
