Clostridium difficile, or more commonly known as C. diff, is a type of bacteria that affects and causes infection to the digestive system. In most cases, the infection is not severe. However, it displays symptoms that can be uncomfortable to bear.
Only few cases are considered serious and are mostly seen in people who have pre-existing illnesses. Vulnerable or high-risk patients often require medical interventions as their symptoms may lead to dehydration and fatality. Here are some of the common signs and symptoms of C. diff infection.
1. Diarrhea
This is probably the most obvious symptom of C. diff infection. When an infection occurs in the digestive tracts, it leads to different adverse effects such as irritation of the stomach or intestines. This then results in the rapid flow of the food from the mouth to the anus or medically termed as diarrhea.
As the food consumed is not processed properly, the infected body will have a tough time absorbing the nutrients and water it needed to continue functioning correctly. It is crucial to monitor the patient who is suffering from diarrhea as it may branch out to lack of adequate fluid or water in the body as well as nutrient deficiency.
