9. Reactive Arthritis
Another symptom of samonella infection is reactive arthritis. Reactive arthritis is a pretty rare complication that affects 6 to 30 percent of all salmonella infections. The so-called arthritis triad that includes conjunctivitis, urethritis, and arthritis can inflame the joints, irritate the eyes, and trigger burning sensation when urinating.
Usually, symptoms of reactive arthritis will appear after a few weeks or months of getting exposed to the salmonella bacteria. It is not known what really causes this complication, but it is usually due to bacterial infection that is food borne. Experts believe that reactive arthritis could be an autoimmune condition which was a result of abnormally high immune reaction to the food poisoning.
