6. Dehydration
Dehydration is another common symptom during salmonellosis. However, it is only a secondary symptom of the salmonella infection since it is not directly due to the bacteria. Usually, dehydration happens when the patient loses body fluids after constant vomiting and diarrhea. Furthermore, due to their nauseousness, most patients will try to avoid drinking or eating. It is also difficult for patients to drink plenty of water when they are bedridden with fever.
Therefore, if the vomiting and diarrhea persist for several days and the patient is unable to hydrate him/herself, it can lead to severe dehydration. If this happens, patients have to head to the hospital for an IV.
