5. Slurred Speech
When myasthenia gravis affects the muscles around the diaphragm, throat, mouth, and even tongue, impairments with speeches can occur. A particular condition where patients are observed to have slurred speech is dysarthria. It is usually encountered by younger patients and is mostly triggered by talking for long hours.
Although most cases do not display a severe change in speech, patients can easily recognize that something is wrong with it. It can be subtle and sporadic as well. Slurred speech can be treated based on its underlying cause. For patients with myasthenia gravis, treatments may include speech-therapies and muscle-strengthening activities.
