10 Signs and Symptoms of Liver Damage

7. Pain and swelling in the legs and ankles (edema).

Edema, or chronic pain and swelling in the lower extremities, is linked to liver disease in the later stages of fibrosis, or cirrhosis of the liver.

Impaired liver function in turn causes a build up of toxins and fluid retention.

With gravity being the main cause, retained fluids will travel down and start to accumulate in the lower extremities – the legs, ankles and feet. This results in discomfort, pain and swelling in those areas, especially to the legs and ankles. In more severe cases, the swelling might even affect the entire leg.
