8. Chronic Coughing
There are multiple negative effects of having acid reflux due to hiatal hernia. One of these negative effects is chronic coughing. Chronic coughing due to reflux caused by hiatal hernia occurs when some of the substances present in the stomach move up to the esophagus and cause the patient to draw breathe or aspirate.
When this irritant or blockage is not removed, the lungs work harder to eliminate it by coughing more frequently than usual. Chronic coughing and reflux may lead to developing one another. Some patients may suffer from coughing first then reflux while others experience reflux first and develop it into coughing.
