3. Belching or Burping

Another sign of hiatal hernia is excesive belching. Belching, or most commonly known as burping, is a normal condition that even babies and children experience. It occurs when excess gas is present and is secreted through the upper digestive passages. People usually encounter belching or burping after a meal or when consuming carbonated drinks.

In the presence of hiatal hernia, burping happens more frequently than normal and is sometimes accompanied by having hiccups. Most of the time, belching does not cause any pain to the patient, but in some cases wherein repeated burping is caused by hiatal hernia, patients may encounter a pain around the upper part of the abdomen.
