10. Dehydration

Sometimes, the patient will avoid drinking while battling with the disease because they find swallowing uncomfortable due to the presence of sores. If this is the case, then there is a good chance that the patient will end up dehydrated.

To avoid dehydration, parents should encourage the child to drink enough water or other fluids. If the presence of sores makes it difficult for the patient to swallow or drink the liquid, the patient should be taken to the hospital to receive intravenous therapy (IV) rehydration. Dehydration should be avoided at all costs because this can exacerbate the symptoms and prolong the patient’s recovery.
