10. Fixed Dilated Pupil

Another common symptom of retinal detachment found in patients who had encountered trauma is a fixed dilated pupil. Usually, physicians would look for the relative afferent pupillary defect or RAPD in a patient to determine the cause of the dilated pupil. They will do this by observing the patient’s eye during an examination.

When a patient has this condition, the pupils will constrict when it is exposed to bright light.  The most common cause behind the RAPD is the presence of lesions on the optic nerve. It can also happen if the patient has a severe retinal disease, which is also common among patients with a detached retina.
