Dementia can affect parts of brain which control movement and balance. Consequently, patients are not able to tell where their feet should go. Thus, they can end up misjudging their steps and this makes them fall down the sidewalks or stairs. Dementia may also cause weakness in limbs which also another reason leading to falls.
Some patients will also lose their sense of direction so it is common for them to forget where they live. It is therefore important that family, friends, or a health care professional to closely monitor the patient’s movement and whereabouts.
