5. Apathy, Loss of Motivation

Another common behavioral disturbance of dementia is apathy. People with apathy will show signs of lacking in interest, initiation, persistence, response, insight and even social engagement. Those with dementia will become less interested in life and things or activities which they use to enjoy. This symptom can be accompanied by self isolation.

This is why it is recommended to send them for counseling or have them treated with a mental health care provider. This can help to delay or prevent the onset of anxiety or depression. The loss of interest, along with the other symptoms, can make the patient feel extremely depressed, which can be dangerous. Family and friends must involve the patient in social activities and assist them in maintaining their regular schedule whenever possible.
