9. Congenital Varicella Syndrome

Chickenpox can also affect pregnant women, especially those who have not been vaccinated with the varicella-zoster virus during the course of her pregnancy. It is important to note that the first six months of a woman’s pregnancy are usually associated with a higher risk of infections.

If the mother gets infected with the varicella-zoster virus before the 28th week of her pregnancy, the virus can get into the placenta and will potentially infect the fetus. This can make the baby develop several congenital disorders and malformations that include brain damage. The child can also develop inflammatory or congenital disorders in the eye, bladder dysfunction, and neurological abnormalities.
