10. Neonatal Varicella

If the pregnant woman has acquired the virus infection during the last three weeks of her pregnancy, the virus can also reach the placenta and infect the child. This condition is known as neonatal varicella.

Neonatal varicella can also take place after the mother gives birth. However, this is less likely to lead to congenital anomalies, although it’s still something serious. According to some medical experts, the death rate of newborns who has acquired the neonatal varicella is 1 in every 5. The good news is that babies who are infected but born to a vaccinated mother will be protected from the virus infection.
