6. Abdominal swelling
One telling sign of bowel obstruction is abdominal swelling. Abdominal swelling, also known as distention, can happen if the gas or fluid accumulates inside the abdomen, which then causes outward expansion. This is usually a result of certain conditions, such as parasitic infections, bowel disease, food poisoning, celiac disease, and bowel obstruction.
Patients who will experience swelling in their abdomen will usually complain about feeling bloated. Aside from abdominal swelling, other symptoms are cramping, nausea, and in some patients, this can lead to shortness of breath. The intra-abdominal pressure that causes the swelling of the abdomen can be relieved by burping or passing gas, more commonly known as farting.
