Another food known to cause heartburn and acid reflux is Onion. Onion has been found to relax the esophagus sphincter, which in turn cause acid reflux. The reason is because onions contain fermentable fiber which can cause belching. Constant belching can worsen acid reflux symptoms. A particular research was done to show the connection between onions and heartburn. In the experiment, participants had been given two hamburgers, one with onions and one without. After the participants ate the burger with onions, their heartburn symptoms got worse.

While raw onions is known to cause acid reflux, cooked ones may also have the same effect. Eat fewer onions or none if you are suffering from acid reflux or GERD.
