9. Difficulty Swallowing
Sometimes, tetanus patients will have a hard time swallowing, a condition also referred to as dysphagia. This symptom happens due to the blockage of nerve signals in the body. The blockage of the signals causes muscle stiffness and spasms and affect proper functions of your muscles. This will start at the muscles responsible for chewing and will eventually spread to the neck, leading to dysphagia.
If left untreated, the stiffness can further spread into the lungs which can result in fatal consequences. This is one of the reasons why tetanus infection warrants immediate medical help. Also, if the infection is located close to the nervous system, the symptoms can be even more severe.
