5. Constipation
One common symptom of pancreatic cancer is constipation. For patients undergoing opioid therapy for the treatment of the cancer, they can find themselves suffering from constipation. Prevention must immediately start the moment the patient is prescribed with opioids. Constipation can also be due to other factors, such as decreased intake of fluid and a diet that is low in fiber. Since the patient will mostly be stuck in bed, the prolonged bed rest may also contribute to constipation.
Constipation can be treated in various ways, but the treatment will usually depend on the underlying cause. If a pancreatic cancer patient is suffering from constipation, fluid intake should be encouraged. The doctor may also prescribe laxatives, such as lactulose or Dulcolax.
