7. Mouth and Tongue Sores
The lack of iron can also lead to the growth of sores in the mouth and tongue. This is why some doctors will check the inside of the mouth to look for an indication of iron deficiency when diagnosing a patient. Since the body does not have enough iron to produce hemoglobin, the organs and tissues in the body will not get enough oxygen.
Since the tongue is the most visible muscle in our body, it is often the first body part which will show symptoms if your body does not have enough oxygen. Aside from developing sores, the tongue can also become swollen. Some patients also complained of having a dry mouth, red cracks, and mouth ulcers.
