8. Visual Field Defect
To determine if the visual field is affected by certain illnesses, it is usually tested in optometry, ophthalmology, and neurology. One of the most common methods that professionals would use in assessing the visual field is to ask the patient to identify the number of fingers being acted out in front of the patient.
For patients with a detached retina, although floaters and some other symptoms cannot help to determine the exact location of the retinal tear, the defect in the visual field may help to determine the visual field defects. The defects that are dense are produced by the bullous detachments while the relative field defects are often seen on flat detachments.
