7. Inability to Understand Sarcasm and Lies
Patients who have dementia will find it difficult to understand sarcasm or insincere speech. They will also have trouble detecting a lie. When the brain functions are muddled, the patient will find it difficult to distinguish sarcasm from seriousness. They will take everything literally and will not understand the figures of speech and common expressions. As a result, they can be extremely gullible. This makes them vulnerable to con artist or people who want to make use of them.
According to studies this symptom is an early sign of a particular dementia known as frontotemporal dementia. This the most frequent form of dementia is adult under 60 years old.
