6. Sugar Alcohols
Sugar alcohols can distress the digestive system particularly for those with diverticulosis. Sugar alcohol such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol are used as artificial sweeteners and are found in many diet foods, sugar-free and reduced-sugar food products. Most sugar alcohols are difficult to digest and therefore take a long to digest. The result of the extended digestion time can be flatulence, pain and other uncomfortable disturbances. Consuming any of these artificial sweeteners are hard on the digestive system and even harder on those with diverticulosis.
