10 Diverticulosis Foods to Avoid

5. Beans and Legumes

Both beans and legumes are difficult to digest because of their plant fiber makeup. Legumes like chickpeas, black-eyed peas, peas, lentils, soybeans and peanuts contain phytic acid which may be beneficial. However, at the same time, legumes can weaken the absorption of certain important minerals. Hard beans such as kidney and navy beans are difficult to digest because of their complex sugar composition. Digestion difficulties with beans exist because people with diverticulosis cannot produce a certain enzyme (alpha-galactosidase) that is responsible in breaking down the fibrous content of beans.
