Sugar free products doubles the risk of Metabolic Syndrome
Research conducted into sugar free products has found that a person drinking artificially-sweetened beverages has double the risk of metabolic syndrome as compared to non-consumers. Metabolic syndrome surfaces as multiple conditions such as elevated blood pressure, unnaturally high blood sugar levels, abnormal cholesterol levels, and extra fat around the waist. These conditions is a breeding ground for other illnesses and diseases. Particularly, metabolic syndrome increase risk of diabetes by 5 times.
Sugar free products may cause adverse effects on Type 2 Diabetes
The consumption of sugar free products is a dilemma for diabetic patients. While it may help to reduce sugar intake for the sweet-toothed and help control blood sugar levels, it can lead to increased food intake. Consuming artificial sweeteners does not impact blood glucose levels, however, as a natural response to its sweetness the body continues to increase insulin levels. This results in increased hypoglycemia and causes one to consume more calories in subsequent meal, a factor leading to weight gain.
Furthermore, the use of artificial sweeteners as sugar substitute to control blood glucose levels is not an ideal long term solution. A mass research conducted by Israeli medical groups in 2014 found that artificial sweeteners can affect the activity of beneficial microorganisms in the digestive tract, known as gut microbata, hence resulting in increased blood glucose levels.
