What Is Pre-mixed Insulin?

Pre-mixed insulin is applied twice a day once in the morning and once before going to bed as oppose to multi-dose insulin which is used after every meal. There are two types of pre-mixed insulin; these are the intermediate acting insulin mixed with rapid acting insulin and the intermediate acting insulin mixed with regular acting insulin. These pre-mixed insulin types are generally more affordable.

Intermediate and rapid acting pre-mixed insulin examples:

  1. Novolog: consists of 70% intermediate acting and 30% rapid acting insulin

  2. Humalog: consists of 75% intermediate acting and 25% rapid acting insulin

  3. Humalog: with 50% intermediate acting and 50% rapid acting insulin.

These pre-mixed insulin samples have an onset time between 10 to 15 minutes. It can climax between 4 to 5 hours and lasts for 10 to 16 hours maximum.

Intermediate and regular acting pre-mixed insulin examples:

  1. Humulin: consists of 70% NPH insulin mixed with 30% regular acting insulin.

  1. Novolin: consists of 70% NPH and 30% regular acting insulin.

  1. Humulin: with 50% NPH insulin and 50% regular acting insulin.

It has an onset time of that is longer compared to the latter pre-mixed samples which varies from 30 to 60 minutes. It can reach a climax that varies from 4 to 5 hours and could last a maximum of 10 to 16 hours.
