During menopause, hormonal changes bring about vaginal dryness. Diabetes is known to damage the nerves of the cells lining the vagina. When compounded by vaginal dryness during menopause, nerve damage of the vaginal lining can lead to intense pain during sex, difficulty in sexual arousal and increased difficulty in reaching orgasm among diabetic women. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels damage nerves of the vaginal wall and cause them to become thin and inflamed.
