#3 Diabetic Retinopathy

Due to decreasing hormones, perimenopausal women or fully menopausal women can experience symptoms like visual disturbances. Menopausal women in their 40s or 50s begin to develop vision problems such as presbyopia, which does not allow them to focus on objects nearby, a progressive condition. Diabetic women are also at elevated risk for developing cataracts and some kinds of glaucoma, for example, primary-open angle glaucoma (POAG). Women suffering from Type 2 diabetes are at high risk for developing POAG. If high blood sugar levels persist, diabetic retinopathy can develop and vision may be lost over time. However, with timely medication and lifestyle changes, blood sugar levels can be brought under control.
