bagel

(Whole Grain) Bagel

Labelled as low-fat, bagels are a popular dieting meal. However, despite being low in fat, it is mostly made of refined flour and hence high in simple carbohydrates which spikes blood sugar levels. Even the multi-grain or whole grain variety are still made with a base of refined flour. Usually paired with cream cheese, a bagel breakfast contains empty carbs and saturated fats with little nutritional value.

Tip: Instead of cream cheese, eat it with avocado and smoked salmon to balance the meal with protein and omega fatty acids. These contribute to slowing digestion and managing blood glucose levels. Of course, stick with the whole-grain bagel.
