Oats are known for its health benefits such as lowering cholestrol and regulating blood sugar. Traditionally, oatmeals are made by cooking oats for around 30 minutes and flavored with fruits. However, the rising demand of convenience and a marketing strategy for targeting younger crowd led to the birth of instant flavored oatmeals in sachets which can be ready-to-eat in less than a minute.
Instant flavored varieties should never end up in a diabetics shopping bag as they are packed with added sugar, sometimes artificial sweeteners and dried fruits. These rob the benefits of oats in controlling blood sugar.
Tip: When in doubt, always go for the product that require cooking like certain instant oats, irish oats, rolled oats or steel cut oats.
