The use of hibiscus as a herbal treatment for diabetes originated in India where it was typically consumed as tea. More detailed animal studies done recently compared its petal extract with a common diabetic drug, metformin, with the former found more effective in controlling the diabetic disorder. Although the chemistry of its anti-diabetic effect is still unknown, it was evident that the flower has hypoglycemic, anti-oxidizing, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and heart protecting properties thus rendering it a potential diabetic herbal medication. Further work is ongoing to produce a concoction of hibiscus herbal health drink to treat diabetes.
Tip: Make 1 cup of tea out of 1-2 teaspoons of hibiscus dried flowers. Drink it 3 times a day.
