The use of Gymnema slyvestre to cure diabetes originated in India where it is consumed as tea to control sugar levels. The primary compound, gymnemic acid, stimulates the beta-cells in the pancreas to produce insulin and hence managing blood glucose level. Gymnemic acid also help in preventing the flow of glucose into the blood in the intestine and stops the liver from generating unwanted glucose in to the bloodstream.
The herb is also effective in curbing sugar cravings.
Tip: Drink the tea at least 10 minutes before a meal.
