Crepe myrtle or Lagerstroemia speciosa is a flowering tree commonly found in tropical countries and Australia. Different part of this medicinal plant was found to treat various ailments. In particular, based on ayurvedic medicine, the extract from its leaves contains corosolic acid which has blood sugar lowering effect. A study shown that a mere 32-48 mg of the extract taken over two weeks resulted in an average of 25% drop in blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also believed to increase the body's sensitiviy to insulin.
