There has been an increase interest in yoga as a treatment for bipolar disorder. A survey conducted on bipolar patients who practise yoga reflected many benefits experienced by patients which include calmness, decrease anxiety, alertness, clarity of thought and reduced negative thoughts. These improvements was associated with the breathing practices and the meditation in yoga. However, despite a generally positive response, some patients experience adversed effects such as agitation caused by irregular breathing, frustration and physical injuries.
Tip: Yoga should be used as an adjunctive treatment and not the sole treatment. Do yoga as a complement to medication and psychotherapy.
