Research has shown that patients suffering from psychiatric disorders are found with lower levels of magnesium which is needed to regulate nerves. A deficiency in magnesium can damage neurons in our brain and lead to depression, bipolar and other psychiatric illness. Many doctors prescribe magnesium supplementation to reduce bipolar symptoms such as irritability, insomia or even sucidal thoughts. Some doctors even found magnesium more effective than lithium, a common bipolar medication, as it has lesser side effects yet produces equivalent results.
Tip: Whole grains and dark leafy greens are filled with a good content of magnesium.
