Dr. Gudas states they are yet to find out how the phenomenon of removing Vitamin A causes death of the beta cells responsible for generating insulin in the pancreas. But for now, it has been established that beta cells in the pancreas are highly sensitive to the dietary removal of Vitamin A. The team is hopeful that future research will cement the fact that a synthetic version of the nutrient could be the key to reversing type-2 diabetes.

What are the sources of Vitamin A?

Although further studies are needed to support this findings, there is no harm in ensuring you meet your daily Vitamin A requirements. Go for natural sources that can be found in whole foods. Vitamin A comes in two types:

  • Preformed Vitamin A, referred to as retinol, which is found in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products.

  • Pro-vitamin A or beta-carotene, present in several fruits and vegetables.
