When choosing peanut butter, consider these factors:
An all natural peanut butter should be made out of only salt and nuts. Hence, a healthy product should contain as little ingredients as possible and ideally contain only natural ingredients. Compare the brands of a few types of nut butter and settle for one with the least ingredients.
Look for peanut butters that do not contain added sugars or salts. Sugars could be listed as corn syrup, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, etc.
If oils are part of the ingredients, remember they aren't required and can only add calories to your peanut butter.
Hydrogenated oil is a common ingredient in many popular peanut butter brands. Hydrogenated oil is made up of trans-fat which increase the risk for heart disease.
Don't fall for low-fat labels or versions of peanut butter because most manufacturers add on sugar and additives for added flavor in order to make up for the reduced fat or oil. This gives you the same number of calories, though with unhealthy ingredients.
