How to adopt mindfulness and mindful eating?

Managing diabetes is all about normalizing your blood sugar levels. This is can be done by adjusting your food portions, exercising, taking insulin therapy and managing your stress levels. Hence, there are a few ways of using mindfulness and mindful eating for diabetes management:

  • Be mindful or aware of how you plan your food, cook and eat it. Take time to enjoy the aroma of your food, chew and feel its texture and enjoy its taste. This will help you control your eating habits.

  • Listen to your feelings and your body for signs of stress. They can range from escalated heart rate, headache, tightness of muscles, fast breathing to difficulty focusing. Manage your stress appropriately through proper breathing techniques to calm yourself. When you succeed, your blood sugar levels will automatically drop.

  • Be aware of your physical and emotional condition by checking your blood sugar levels periodically through the day and before and after a snack. Being watchful of your body signals to prevent a severe insulin reaction. Correct any faulty eating habits and avoid stressful situations which raises blood sugar levels.
