4. Incretins
Incretins are hormones that are secreted from the intestines. Incretins like the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) enhances the release of insulin from the pancreas after food consumption and can help to control blood glucose levels in prediabetics. GLP-1 also help to provide the feeling of fullness during and after meals and delay stomach-emptying. It prevents the pancreas from secreting Glucagon hence preventing additional glucose from entering the bloodstream. Incretin-based drugs such as the GLP-1 Agonist are developed to help treat type 2 diabetes.
